‘Disgrace,’ Agbakoba demands probe of Bulkachuwa

Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, former NBA president and human rights activist, has described as a monumental disgrace, the revelation by Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa that he used to influence his wife’s decision as a judge.

Bulkachuwa, senator representing Bauchi North senatorial district, had claimed during the valedictory session on the 9th Assembly on Monday that he influenced the decision of his wife, Zainab Bulkachuwa, a retired Justice of the Appeal Court.

Zainab Bulkachuwa was president of the Appeal Court between April 2014 to March 2020.

“Particularly my wife, whose freedom and independence I encroached upon when she was in office, and she has been very tolerant and accepted my encroachment and extended her help to my colleagues,” Bulkachuwa said in the video before he was interrupted by the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan.

Unsettled by the statement, Lawan told him, “I don’t think this is a good idea going towards this direction.”

Reacting to the development in a statement shared via his Twitter handle @oagbakoba on Tuesday, Agbakoba asked that the senator be taken up by the authorities.

“Senator Bulkachuwa’s statement at the Valedictory of the 9th Senate is a monumental disgrace for our institutions. This man deserves to be taken up immediately by the authorities,” Agbakoba said.

“It is a blight on my confidence in our systems. I represented Usman Tuggar in relation to disputed elections between him and Senator Bulkachuwa for Bauchi North senatorial. We lost in 3 courts.

“Senator Bulkachuwa seems to suggest why President Bola Tinubu must cleanse the system in a most dramatic and fundamental process if he wishes to succeed.

“The chairman of @NDICNigeria has also made dramatic revelations pointing to possible deep rot in our systems of Government responsible for financial and monetary policy.

“The president ought to act now!!!”
