The Federal Government has declared Thursday, December 25, 2025; Friday, December 26, 2025; and Thursday, January 1, 2026, as public holidays for Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year celebrations.
The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who urged Nigerians to use the festive season to promote unity, peace and compassion, while remaining law-abiding and security-conscious.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered heightened security nationwide to ensure a peaceful yuletide. A statement by Force spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, said police commands have intensified patrols, visibility policing, intelligence-led operations and community engagement.
Specialised units, including the Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Command, Intelligence Response Team, Marine Police and the Airwing, have been placed on high alert. Security coverage includes places of worship, markets, recreational centres, highways, transport terminals and other high-density areas.
State commands have also rolled out additional measures. Kano State banned car racing, unauthorised horse riding and fireworks, while Kogi reinforced patrols along the Lokoja–Abuja highway. Sokoto launched “Operation Peaceful Celebration 2025” and prohibited fireworks, while Jigawa and the FCT deployed personnel to protect public spaces and dismantle criminal hideouts.
The police urged Nigerians to celebrate responsibly, remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through designated emergency channels.
