Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, announced that President Bola Tinubu has directed that filling stations across the country be converted into outlets for compressed natural gas (CNG). Ekpo made this statement after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, presided over by the president.
Ekpo shared that during the meeting, Tinubu, through the Minister of Information, emphasized the importance of advancing the CNG initiative. He reminded the public of the presidential committee established to drive the CNG project forward, noting that CNG is not only safer and more affordable but also environmentally friendly.
The president’s directive focuses on converting most of the country’s filling stations into CNG stations, equipping them with conversion kits to allow vehicles to switch to CNG. According to Ekpo, “CNG offers significant savings, with a litre of petrol costing as much as N1,000, while CNG is available for N200, saving N800 per litre.”
Ekpo added that with the president’s commitment to the CNG programme, efforts will be made to extend the initiative across all regions of the country, enabling Nigeria to fully harness its natural gas resources.
Earlier, on October 22, President Tinubu stated that Nigerians would have the choice to either buy premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, at N1,000 per litre or opt for CNG at N200 per standard cubic meter.
