Tinubu is not ‘T-pain’ – Onanuga

Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has dismissed the nickname “T-pain” that has been circulating on Nigerian social media. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Onanuga clarified that Tinubu is deeply aware of and concerned about the hardships Nigerians are facing, and he’s working hard to alleviate them.

The term “T-pain” is U.S. singer Faheem Najm’s stage name and has been used by Nigerians online to link Tinubu with the current economic pains felt by citizens. However, Onanuga stressed that while Tinubu’s economic policies might involve short-term hardship, they are intended to set the country on a path toward growth and reform.

“The president knows that people are experiencing challenges,” Onanuga said. “He doesn’t engage with social media, where these names circulate, and sees it as a non-issue. Some people are being mischievous by calling him ‘T-pain,’ but he is not T-pain. He’s aware of Nigerians’ struggles and is actively working to ease them.”

Onanuga highlighted recent economic growth and increased revenues, despite ongoing inflation, as signs of Tinubu’s commitment to recovery. Earlier this month, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar criticized the government’s handling of fuel prices, accusing Tinubu of remaining indifferent to the economic crisis. Atiku claimed the government’s approach to fuel subsidy removal has worsened inflation and harmed the well-being of Nigerians.

“The disorganized approach to subsidy management has brought on this economic crisis,” Atiku said. “With the inflation rate skyrocketing, it’s alarming that ‘T-pain’ seems unbothered by the suffering in the country.”

Onanuga’s statements, however, reinforce the administration’s resolve to push through reforms despite the challenges, with a focus on long-term economic stability and prosperity for Nigerians.
