Subsidy removal: NLC to embark on nationwide strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared a nationwide strike from Wednesday next week over the withdrawal of fuel subsidy by the federal government.

The union had on Thursday said that it has no plan to embark on strike over the withdrawal of fuel subsidy.

Benson Upah, Head of Information and Public Affairs at the NLC while making the declaration had urged members of the public to disregard stories in the rumour mill that it would call workers out on strike from June 2 as the stories did not emanate from the congress.

However, there were reports earlier that the labour union subsequently summoned an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) on Friday.

Rising from its NEC meeting on Friday, the NLC said the Federal Government had until Wednesday next week to revert to the old price of N185 or face an industrial action.

Ajaero said if the ultimatum was not met, the industrial action would be followed by protests across the country.

The NEC comprises all Presidents, General Secretaries, Treasurers of all NLC’s affiliate unions; State Chairpersons and Secretaries of the NLC State Councils, Chairperson of the NLC Youth Committee and members of the National Administrative Council (NAC).
