Sanwo-Olu didn’t authorize case against EFCC – Lagos govt

The Lagos State Government has clarified that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu did not instruct anyone to file a legal case against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

On Tuesday, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that a suit was filed allegedly on behalf of Sanwo-Olu, seeking to prevent the EFCC from arresting or prosecuting him after his tenure.

In response, Lagos Attorney-General Lawal Pedro issued a statement saying the state would investigate how the case was filed without the governor’s knowledge. He affirmed that neither Sanwo-Olu nor any of his aides are under investigation by the EFCC, and no arrest threat has been made by the anti-corruption agency.

“We wish to clarify that Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu did not sue or instruct any legal practitioner to initiate a suit on his behalf regarding this matter,” the statement reads. “It would be implausible for the governor, who currently has constitutional immunity and nearly three years left in office, to brief a lawyer on such an issue.”

Pedro also confirmed that, to his knowledge, the EFCC has not investigated or threatened the governor or his staff. “For the avoidance of doubt, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated exemplary service, prudently managing public resources,” Pedro added. “The governor, dedicated to improving the lives of all Lagosians, has no reason to fear any investigation when he completes his tenure in May 2027.”

The Lagos government continues to look into how the case surfaced without authorization.
