PSV crush Liverpool 4–1 at Anfield

Liverpool’s season continued to unravel on Wednesday night as they fell 4–1 to PSV at Anfield, their ninth defeat in 12 matches across all competitions.

Arne Slot arrived under pressure after consecutive three-goal losses in the league, and while the Champions League had offered brief relief, this setback has revived major concerns about the direction of his team.

PSV struck first after six minutes when Virgil van Dijk conceded a penalty for handball, allowing Ivan Perisic to convert from the spot. Liverpool equalised soon after as Dominic Szoboszlai tapped in a rebound following Cody Gakpo’s saved attempt.

The hosts pushed for a second — Gakpo went close and van Dijk hit the crossbar — but PSV regained control when Mauro Júnior’s incisive pass unlocked the defence for Guus Til to finish.

Things went from bad to worse for Liverpool as substitute Couhaib Driouech scored twice, first reacting quickest to a rebound from Ricardo Pepi’s shot, then adding a composed stoppage-time finish to seal a famous win for the Dutch champions.

The result lifted PSV to 15th in the league-phase standings, their first victory over an English side since beating Tottenham in 2008, while Liverpool dropped to 13th and face mounting pressure in the race for a top-eight finish.
