Paystack places co-founder Ezra Olubi on suspension amid misconduct claim

Paystack has suspended its co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Ezra Olubi, after a sexual misconduct allegation involving a subordinate surfaced on social media this week. The Stripe-owned fintech confirmed the action on Thursday, saying it has opened a formal internal investigation.

“Paystack is aware of the allegations involving our co-founder, Ezra Olubi. We take matters of this nature extremely seriously,” the company said in a statement. “Effective immediately, Ezra has been suspended from all duties and responsibilities pending the outcome of a formal investigation.”

The company said it will withhold further comments until the inquiry is completed.

The allegation gained visibility after a Nigerian tech publication published a report drawing attention to several of Olubi’s decade-old tweets. The resurfaced posts — dating from 2009 to 2013 — included sexually suggestive comments, remarks about a coworker, and posts referencing minors. One 2011 tweet that widely circulated read: “Monday will be more fun with an ‘a’ in it. Touch a coworker today. Inappropriately.”

Olubi co-founded Paystack with CEO Shola Akinlade in 2015. The company became one of Africa’s most prominent tech success stories following its acquisition by U.S. payments giant Stripe in 2020 in a deal reportedly worth more than $200 million.

The development has sparked debate across social media about workplace conduct, leadership accountability, and internal culture within the Nigerian tech ecosystem.
