Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, has passed away at the age of 56. According to a statement released by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga on Wednesday morning, Mr. Lagbaja died in Lagos on Tuesday night after a brief illness.
President Bola Tinubu conveyed his deep condolences to the family and the Nigerian Armed Forces, expressing his appreciation for Lt. General Lagbaja’s dedicated service to the nation and wishing him eternal peace.
Recently, unconfirmed reports circulated about Mr. Lagbaja’s death, which the Defence Headquarters dismissed, stating that he was on leave. Shortly afterward, President Tinubu appointed Major General Olufemi Oluyede as acting Chief of Army Staff. On Tuesday, Mr. Oluyede was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general, signaling his anticipated formal appointment as the new Chief of Army Staff.
