The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised concerns about the illegal sale and distribution of counterfeit condoms across Nigeria.
According to NAFDAC, its Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate recently discovered unregistered Foula condoms, sold in packs of three, in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, and Zango, Katsina State. The agency noted that these products are not registered for use in Nigeria and carry labeling in a non-English language.
NAFDAC warned that these unregistered condoms may leak or break, failing to provide adequate protection. It has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to enhance monitoring, conduct surveillance, and eliminate these unregulated products.
The agency emphasized that distributing or selling unregistered condoms poses a significant health risk, as the quality, safety, and effectiveness of such products are not assured.
“The use of poor-quality condoms could undermine efforts to prevent unintended pregnancies and protect against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Leaks or breaks render condoms ineffective in offering protection,” NAFDAC stated.
All importers, distributors, retailers, healthcare professionals, and consumers are advised to exercise caution within the supply chain. NAFDAC further urges that all medical devices, including condoms, should only be obtained from authorized and licensed suppliers.
