Mojisola Meranda has resigned as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Reading her resignation letter aloud during a special plenary session on Monday, she announced, “This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.”
Meranda assumed office on January 13, 2025, after the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Despite her short tenure, lawmakers commended her leadership and efforts in fostering a positive atmosphere within the Assembly.
She resigned alongside all principal officers appointed during her time as Speaker, following a meeting with senior members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) aimed at resolving the ongoing leadership crisis.
The crisis began when Obasa was removed by a two-thirds majority of the 40-member Assembly over allegations of misconduct. As his deputy, Meranda was subsequently sworn in, making history as the state’s first female Speaker.
However, Obasa rejected his removal, arguing that due process was not followed and condemning what he described as the militarization of the Assembly complex.
On February 27, 2025, he arrived at the complex under the escort of armed security operatives, insisting that he remained the rightful Speaker. Despite this, the majority of lawmakers continued to recognize Meranda’s leadership—until her resignation.
