Immigration confirms Bobrisky’s arrest

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) on Monday identified social media personality, Okuneye Idris, popularly known as Bobrisky, as a person of interest in an ongoing investigation. The NIS also confirmed that its officers apprehended Bobrisky at the Seme border while he attempted to flee the country earlier in the day.

In a statement released by the NIS Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Udo, the service announced, “The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to inform the public that OKUNEYE IDRIS is a person of interest due to recent matters of public concern.” The statement was titled, ‘Nigeria Immigration Service Intercepts Idris Okuneye (Bobrisky) at Seme Border Attempting to Flee the Country’.

The controversy surrounding Bobrisky traces back to April 2024, when he was sentenced to six months in prison by the Federal High Court in Lagos for currency-related offenses. Although he was initially incarcerated at Kirikiri Prison, reports later surfaced that Bobrisky had spent only three weeks in custody before being quietly relocated to a private facility. This fueled public speculation that his early release and preferential treatment were the result of bribery, with allegations that a N15 million payment had been made to officials to facilitate his transfer and secure more favorable conditions.

The situation further escalated in late September 2024 when fellow social media influencer, VeryDarkMan, leaked an audio recording allegedly involving Bobrisky. In the recording, Bobrisky purportedly claimed that music artist Falz and his father, human rights lawyer Femi Falana, had approached him during his imprisonment, seeking N10 million in exchange for a presidential pardon.

In response to these allegations, Falana and Falz issued a cease-and-desist letter on October 16, 2024, demanding a retraction and public apology for what they called defamatory remarks. Bobrisky, however, denied making such claims and argued that he was not responsible for the leaked audio, urging the Falanas to address VeryDarkMan instead.

The NIS, in its Monday statement, reaffirmed its commitment to securing Nigeria’s borders. “In line with its responsibility to safeguard the nation’s borders, the Nigeria Immigration Service intercepted Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, otherwise known as Bobrisky, at the Seme Border while attempting to exit the country. He is currently undergoing interrogation and will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action.”

The NIS also assured the public that it remains committed to handling its duties professionally and maintaining civility while managing the country’s borders.
