FG Shuts 22 illegal Colleges of Education

The Federal Government has closed down 22 illegal Colleges of Education operating across the country.

The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) disclosed this in its recent report on achievements, noting that the institutions were uncovered during a nationwide crackdown on unaccredited colleges.

“The NCCE identified and shut down 22 illegal Colleges of Education operating across the country. The commission also conducted personnel audits and financial monitoring in all 21 federal Colleges of Education,” the report stated.

The move comes after President Bola Tinubu directed education regulatory agencies to intensify efforts in weeding out “certificate mills” eroding the credibility of Nigeria’s academic system.

Speaking at the 14th convocation of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja, Tinubu—represented by Rakiya Ilyasu, Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education—warned that the integrity of the country’s education sector must not be compromised.

He emphasized his administration’s commitment to strengthening coordination among key education agencies, including the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the NCCE, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

“These agencies are working in alignment to improve the quality of education and ensure that cases of forgery and unrecognised institutions, both within and outside the country, have no place in our education ecosystem,” the President said.
