EFCC releases Obiano, seizes passport

Willie Obiano, the immediate past governor of Anambra State has been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after spending almost one week in custody.

Obiano was arrested barely 24 hours after handing over to his successor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, on Thursday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on his way to the United States, where Newswatchplus learnt he has investments.

The anti-graft agency granted the former governor administrative bail on Wednesday, while waiting for him to fulfil his bail conditions.

As part of his bail condition, the EFCC also seized his passport.

Newswatchplus had reported that Obiano was arrested over the alleged misapplication of N42 billion belonging to the Anambra State.

“Obiano was arrested for alleged misappropriation of public funds, including, N5 billion Sure-P and N37 billion security vote which was withdrawn in cash. Part of the funds was also allegedly diverted to finance political activities in the state,” Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said after the former governor’s arrest.

While in custody, a leaked video of Obiano drinking water while seated, was all over the internet and was strongly condemned by many Nigerians.

The EFCC issued a statement letting Nigerians know that it had identified its operatives who made and shared the video, and sanctioned them.
