A smartphone designed specifically for children, featuring built-in safety features and remote monitoring for parents, has launched in the UK.
Pinwheel, a unique operating system tailored for young users, is installed on a range of existing smartphones and works across all major networks. The US-based company claims it offers a better solution than basic phones, which may lack appeal, or high-end smartphones, which often lack robust safety features.
The Pinwheel system enables parents to remotely oversee their child’s text messages and call history, approve contacts, set app time limits, and manage a curated library of age-appropriate apps. Social media and web browsers are excluded to create a safer digital environment for children.
Amid rising concerns about the effects of social media and screen time on children’s mental and physical health, many tech companies have introduced parental controls in recent years. However, these often rely on platform-specific tools or require parents to use similar devices, creating a fragmented experience.
In contrast, Pinwheel offers a centralized online portal that allows parents to monitor and adjust settings remotely. This flexibility lets families gradually unlock more features as children mature, helping them build healthy digital habits.
Dane Witbeck, CEO and founder of Pinwheel, said: “Since our US launch, demand from parents in the UK has been overwhelming, and we’re thrilled to finally bring Pinwheel here. Our phones let families enjoy the benefits of staying connected – from sharing photos and playing games to texting friends – while ensuring safety and reducing family tensions.”
He added: “Our goal is to help children develop responsible technology use, free from the distractions and risks of social media and unrestricted internet access.”
The Pinwheel launch aims to give parents greater peace of mind and empower children to engage with technology in a safe, age-appropriate way.
