Manchester United suffered a shock Carabao Cup exit on Wednesday night after falling to League Two side Grimsby Town in a penalty shootout.
Rúben Amorim’s team had looked to regain control when second-half substitutes Bruno Fernandes, Matthijs de Ligt and Bryan Mbeumo changed the tempo. Mbeumo fired United ahead in the 75th minute, but Harry Maguire’s equaliser kept the contest alive.
The match went to penalties, where United goalkeeper Andre Onana saved Clarke Oduor’s effort. But Grimsby’s James Pym immediately denied Matheus Cunha, restoring balance. With the shootout locked in sudden death, Mbeumo hit the crossbar, sealing United’s elimination.
Grimsby advanced to the third round to the delight of their home crowd, whose supporters stormed the field in celebration. For United, it was another painful setback in a season already under scrutiny.
