CAF to announce decision on Libya vs Nigeria on Wednesday

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will announce its decision on Wednesday regarding the disrupted AFCON Group D qualifier between Libya and Nigeria, initially scheduled for October 15 at Benina Martyrs Stadium, Newswatch Plus reports.

Libya Al-Ahrar Channel reports that CAF will address the players’ ordeal during the first leg, which Nigeria won 1-0, and the subsequent cancellation of the return match at Libya’s 10,550-capacity all-seater stadium. The Libyan Football Federation submitted documents, with a specialized lawyer overseeing the case with CAF.

The fixture was delisted a day after the match was canceled just hours before kickoff, with the matter sent to CAF’s Disciplinary Committee. The Libyan Football Federation condemned Nigeria’s actions, accusing the team of refusing to play and vowing to take legal action to defend Libya’s national football interests.

Nigeria’s team had arrived on October 14, but their flight was diverted to Al Abraq International Airport, three hours from Benghazi. Held for 17 hours, the team was eventually forced to return home. Nigeria filed a complaint with CAF, while the Libyan Federation criticized Nigeria’s lack of cooperation, claiming their experience in Nigeria was worse.

CAF described the Nigerian team’s experience in Libya as “extremely dangerous,” citing prolonged delays at the airport, and referred the matter to its Disciplinary Committee for further investigation and action.
