Alaafin of Oyo dies after 52 years on the throne

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has passed on aged 83, NEWSWATCHplus can report.

The top Yoruba monarch in Nigeria, Alaafin Adeyemi, who was the third from the Alowodu Ruling House, died on Friday night at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State.

It has been gathered that the remains of the traditional ruler were taken to Oyo town, 62 kilometres from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, in the early hours of this morning and traditional rites has since started.

Having ruled for 52 years, he was the longest reigning Alaafin ever. Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III ruled with nine Olubadans of Ibadanland.
