Adeleke dumps PDP, declares for Accord Party ahead of 2026 re-election bid

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has formally joined the Accord Party, days after resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The governor made the announcement on Tuesday at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, where he received national and state executives of his new party.

According to a statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke also disclosed that he would seek a second term in office on the platform of the Accord Party—popularly known as the “Thumb-Up” party. He revealed that he had secretly joined the party over a month ago.

“I joined the Accord Party more than a month ago, precisely on November 6, as a platform to seek re-election in 2026 after weeks of consultation and deliberations with stakeholders,” he said. “Osun people know why we are taking this important decision. Our goal is to complete the delivery of good governance and democratic dividends which have been applauded at home and abroad.”

Adeleke said the Accord Party’s core philosophy of welfarism aligned strongly with his administration’s focus on workers’ and citizens’ welfare. He assured party leaders of full cooperation, stressing that the 2026 project requires unity and inclusive leadership.

“Our task is to sustain a united front as we prepare for the elections. Accord Party is here to take over Osun governance and continue the delivery of good governance in our dear state,” he said.

The governor highlighted his administration’s achievements, noting that welfare-driven policies, infrastructure development, and improved social services have placed Osun on a new trajectory of progress. He declared Accord as the new political vehicle for continuity across all zones of the state.

“From Osun West to Osun East and Osun Central, this is our new platform for victory come August next year,” he said, urging supporters across Ijeshaland, Ifeland, Osogbo, Iwoland, Ede and other communities to “thumb up” for continued good governance.

Adeleke’s defection comes after formally announcing his exit from the PDP on December 1, citing prolonged leadership crises at the national level. In a message shared on Instagram, he confirmed that he submitted his resignation to his ward leadership in Ede North Local Government on November 4.

“I thank the PDP and its many supporters for the opportunities they provided me, first as a Senator and now as Governor of Osun State,” he said.
